I recently pieced together a nice 11.5" AR pistol to host my first 5.56 suppressor (YHM Turbo K) and act as my one quality go-to personal defense gun. However, too much time at home social-distancing led me down the dark rabbit hole of terminal ballistics research. As a result, I decided to invest in some 62gr speer gold dot after learning about its performance out of shorter barrels compared to the standard m193 I usually stock up on. I thankfully got lucky on a pretty good deal for 1,500 rounds of it off GunBroker, but came to the realization that it ultimately would be more practical to invest in a nice bullpup that may cost more upfront, but would allow me to save on viable defense ammo for it. This is of course because of the benefit of increased bullet velocity to overall length ratio that bullpups afford compared to AR's and other traditional carbine layouts.
I've always loved the Steyr AUG's design and would love to get one one day, but am mulling over whether I could justify it as a good bullpup to invest in to serve in a primary defense role when there are better out-of-the box options on the market.
I'd love if MAC could do a video about what he thinks it would take to modernize the AUG to be a competitive modern defense gun option (not as a collector item) against the IWI X95, Kel Tec RDB, Desert Tech MDRx, or even non-bullpup options. Additionally, it would be great to see a video about how best to suppress an AUG (I'm guessing an OSS can is the way to go).
At this point I'd feel comfortable switching from my 11.5 AR to a Steyr AUG A3M1 only after getting the follow on aftermarket items :
Geissele Trigger Pack (rumor is it was finally patented in March 2020)
Steyr 1/28" Threaded Barrel (This may have quietly been added as standard in the US market)
Steyr Suppressor gas plug
Corvus Defensio brass deflector
Corvus Defensio Wrap around M-Lok Handguard
Also, possibly the Corvus Defensio charging handle & bolt catch
However, the cost of adding all these aftermarket items may just be dumb route to take instead of just going with a more modern design. BTW, if I went with the latter I'd probably go with the MDRx-SE at this point.
I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on this. Especially from those who have owned one or more of these bullpups.
Thanks
